The Explorer’s Compass

Simple pleasures are the theme of the day.
Like having a roll of charts under your arm
As you embark upon
Unknown waters.

Draw pictures of a sextant, astrolabe,
And chronometer, and write under each picture
The purpose of the instrument. Theology
Ought to be both a statement
Of present belief, and a guide
For further navigation, a thermometer
Aattached to a keyring, and supplied
In a presentation gift tin.

And now the nocturnal visit
Of a familiar ghost.
She resembles both an explorer’s compass,
Controlled by the attraction of a magnetic pole,
And a mathematician’s ruler,
Tracing the geometry
That bisects your past.
