In My Previous Life
I owned a bridal salon in Dallas, Texas. I had a career and friends who were more than three feet tall; then, when I came of age, I married a son of a Wang family, in Baling. I had a very loving husband and five precious children, but I deserted them. I read Time magazine and the newspaper. In short, I learned a few things. (First, always pretend that you live on the sunny side of the street, even if it’s raining. Second, try to live where it doesn’t rain.) I oversaw the building of Mouse Castle, which became a kind of refuge for suffragettes. I felt so noble when I walked through the snow wearing a kimono. Maybe I was a wandering spirit. I don’t have too many regrets.
