Love Poem

I was just a boy when I’d hear you
Come in through the kitchen carrying
Factory smells and the reek of rubber.
She’d hug your neck and kiss your mouth
And take from the roots of you
The weight of the day like someone
Extracting poison from a wound.

Older, I shared a beer with you
In an alcove of a bar down south somewhere
Between North Carolina and Virginia.
But perhaps none of this happened,
For times such as these now seem
Foreign, haunted, and irretrievable
In the way that only dreams are.

I heard that one thing led to another
And you now wear the expression
Of one perplexed, hopeless, and lost.
I see you in a panic turning ’round and ’round
To find that the wind has erased your steps,
Scattered the breadcrumbs, and you grope
The traceless night where there are no paths at all.

In the light of day you can see her sitting
Folding laundry in the living room,
Proud and lonely as childhood’s passing.
